Astyanax saguazu, new species, is distinguished by the following combination of characters: two or threemaxillary teeth, third or fourth tooth of outer premaxillary series inserted posteriorly to the rest, large eye (41-45 % HL), first anal-fin ray inserted anterior to last dorsal-fin ray, high number of anal-fin rays (iv-vi, 25-29), and 37-39 perforated scales in lateral series. The large eye and the presence of 25-29 branched anal-fin rays differentiate the species from other Astyanax living in southern South America.
