All contents of this page are based on the list of freshwater fishes from Argentina published by López et al. in 2003. In fact this was the fifth intent to inform in a single work about the actual status of knowledge in that very moment. The ichthyological research on the species of fishes found in freshwaters of Argentina started in the 18th century, but the first complete overview was provided by Pozzi in 1945. Ringuelet and Arámburu followed in 1962. Only five years later those authors, together with Alonso de Arámburu published a work that untill today is considered ‘the bible of argentinean ichthyology’ by researchers in Argentina and used as a standard work in ichthyological studies throughout the country. Never before and never again all available informations on freshwater fishes of Argentina were gathered on more than 600 pages. It then took again 20 years full of research leading to new knowledge and, in consequence, to systematical news and changes, untill López et al. published a new list in 1987, followed by the actual one from 2003. An overview about the history of freshwater ichthyology in Argentina was provided by López & Aquino in 1998. |
